About Pindrop
Point and shoot, iPhoneography, film, or DSLR. It doesn't matter what format. I love to take photos. I am some what of a GPS nut as well. What do you get when you mix travl, photogrphy, and geo tagging together? Well, Pindropr! Think of Pindripr as a geo aware photo blog. I created Pindropr as a personal project but have now opened it up to others with a similar love for travel and photography. Pindropr is now solcial!
Pindropr has gone through a few versions since the idea was hatched in the fall of 2008. Each time I changed the way photos are uploaded to the map. It started as a WordPress plugin for my iPhone. I finally landed on the idea of using the flickr API to load and gather photo information. Members will need to authorize their flickr account so Pindropr can gather the necessary photo details. flickr authorization is necessary since the geo data that is attached to flickr photos is not accessible without granting permission. The site gathers your photo data and saves it locally to reduce load times. Members can add and delete photos as they wish. When you delete a photo it is deleted from Pindropr for good.
As a member you get a personal home page or sorts. By default the map show everyone's photo. But our personal page only shows your photos. You can send your person page link to your friends and family so they don't have to see everyone else's photos. You can also link directly to a pindrop so that is displayed right away. Pindropr is currently in beta so things are still changing.
Want to help populate the Pindropr map and show me your part of the world? Want to be a pinhead? Just let me know and I will get you started! Keep in mind that the site is in beta so it is not public just yet. Remember you will need a flickr account and your photos geo tagged on the flickr map.
Using the Map
By default the map displays all available markers or pindrops as I call them. You can filter the map by user if you wish. To view a pindrop simply start clicking pins on the map. Red markers are a cluster of pindrops and blue markers are individual markers. Clicking the blue markers will show you the pindrop details. Red markers will zoom in to reveal the blue individual markers.
Another option is to click one of the thumbnails on the right side of the map page. Only the last 50 pindrops are shown so you will need to explore the map if you want to see all the pindrops. Any thumbnail clicked on the right sidebar will jump/zoom you to that pindrop. When you have clicked a pindrop and get the bubble window displayed you can easily navigate the pindrops with the NEXT and BACK links. This will allow you to explore the pindrops sequentially.
As you can see I have tried to make serveral options to view and navigate the pindrops. If you have any suggestions please let me know.
If you have an comments or questions I would love to hear them.
